MCA or business loan: how to compare the two

Published 26 October 2026. Information last checked 26 October 2026.

Businesses that need funding often weigh a merchant cash advance against a business loan. They can both provide cash, but they work differently.

Key differences to compare

  • Repayment. Loans usually have a fixed repayment schedule. An MCA may be tied to card takings or collected in fixed amounts.
  • Total cost. Ask each provider for the total amount repayable, not just a rate.
  • Security. Some loans ask for security or a personal guarantee. Check what each option requires.
  • Speed. Timescales vary by provider and by how complete your documents are.
  • Eligibility. Each provider sets its own criteria.

A simple way to compare

Put the amount received, the total repaid, the repayment pattern and any security side by side. Choose based on what your cash flow can handle.
