What affects the cost of business car and van insurance?

Published 26 October 2026. Information last checked 26 October 2026.

Insurers set the price of business motor cover using several factors. Knowing them helps you give accurate details and compare quotes fairly.

Common factors

  • The vehicle. Type, value, age and how easy it is to repair.
  • How it is used. Commuting only, business travel, carrying goods or tools, or courier and delivery work can be rated differently.
  • The drivers. Age, experience, driving history and claims.
  • Where it is kept. The postcode and whether it is parked off-street or secured.
  • Cover level and excess. Third party only, third party fire and theft, or comprehensive, and the excess you choose.
  • Mileage and number of vehicles. Fleets can be arranged under one policy.

Be accurate

Give correct details about use and drivers. Mistakes can cause problems with a claim later.
